Date:
Tuesday 30th June 2009
Riders: Keith, Julian, Sam, Greg, Nick, Stephen & Colin
Distance:
18 miles
Weather: Perfect
Time: Departed Willowby 19.40, arrived HQ 21.50.
Westy picked the route tonight and virtually to a man it was a run we all thoroughly
enjoyed. Weather conditions were superb, a warm balmy evening with very clear
skies. the group headed south from Yelverton over the moorland to the west of
the A386. We turned through the Gatehouse into the Maristow Estate and sped through
the fantastic grounds kicking up an atmospheric dust cloud as we crossed the
dry track. We arrived at Lopwell to find, not without any surprise, on my part,
the tide almost completely out. Keith took the opportunity of a photo shoot as
the group - in the main rode through the river crossing, Julian used
the bridge
to double up with Steve for perhaps the best shot. Out of Lopwell, we continued
our ascent to Colytown via Vinegar Hill. This was the first of several puff/pant
sessions. A tricky descent, for a mile or so, on a bridle path ensued with no
sign of anything to upset the smooth rhythm of the group. After reaching Bere
Ferres we cycled adjacent to the Tavy estuary. Keith demonstrated the first of
his new found cycle skills here as he completed a fantastic (slow motion) manoeuvre
with a controlled slide and a plop into the mud bank. Not wanting to be
outdone
Julian who has a penchant for mud sliding in this track tried to cycle across
the Tavy. He managed 0.85 metres - Steve particularly applauded/enjoyed the gallant
attempt. Anyhow Vinegar Hill approached again, so on we went, then into Denham
Woods so completing the 2nd puff/pant session. A great ride through the forest
followed. Greg (Mr Teflon - he was riding so smoothly) slipped a gear, caused
a slide from the saddle and a bit of a burn on his thigh. Julian came a cropper
when he had a 1st refusal from his usually trusty steed. Another quick photo
opportunity followed and then it was full speed ahead on more open graveled track
back to Denham Bridge. It provided Keith with his second opportunity to show
recently acquired skills, like a speedway rider he used every last inch of the
bends and hedge as he powered his way down. Two more puff/pants from Denham to
Buckland and from there to Pound estate followed. A reasonably early return to
HQ allowed us sup the first pint in the light. We were joined by Neill Pearce
and Nick's son Fraser to discuss the shirts, the Brewery visit and the Dartmoor
Classic.
