The Routemeister Gets Lost?
There were murmurings in the ranks tonight questioning the Routemeister's sense
of direction. Not surprisingly, these doubts were all unfounded and he proved
to be the only person who knew where the hell we were! Seven gents set out
on
familiar territory, up past Walkhampton church to the old railway line,
usual short cut to Foggin Tor and on into Princetown. Then new ground for most
of
us, we took the road by the Fox Tor Cafe which took us passed Tor Royal (apparently),
Bullpark then a great bridleway to Swincombe which was mainly downhill. At this
point the route appeared very random and very wet. A couple of streams had to
be crossed, Sam showed how to do it if you wanted wet feet and legs! Then, as
if by magic, North Hessary came into view and it was only then that I realised
where we'd been heading! I thought we'd been going south, but we were still north
of Princetown and a long way from HQ with the light beginning to fade. We soon
past Whiteworks,
headed along the track to Nun's Cross farm and onto the familiar track back to
the Scout Hut. With David finding the pace a bit too hot due to a combination
of a lack
of
recent
outings and celebrating the Lions victory too enthusiastically at the weekend,
we spilt into two groups for the return to HQ. It has to be said though, that
once
we were within smelling distance of HQ, David's pace quickened considerably!!
After more debate about the jersey designs everybody went
home
pretty knackered!
