Date:
Wed 5th August
Riders: Paul, Sam, Colin, Paddy, Martyn + 2 Gentlemen of Horrabridge,
Dave Derry and Ian Tweedale (aka Willy Wonka who has offered
mountains of Wrigleys freebies!!).
Distance: 12 miles
Weather: Cloudy with Sunny spells!!!
Time: Departed Willowby 1945 – Arrived HQ ~ 2200
So, with interest from the Gentleman of Horrabridge we set
out to pick them up. Down the cycle track from Yelvy to Horrabridge
and on through the village, up Jordan Lane to pick up Martyn,
Dave & Ian from Dave’s house. A 10 minute rest
was ordered by Paul who required someone to mend his chain
- Paddy volunteered due to experience and his committee position,
thus allowing Paul to stay with us for the rest of the night.
From Dave’s, up the hill to Plasterdown then along the
road to the track up the Eastern side of Pew Tor and on towards
Vixen Tor. Down to ford the river then along the Vixen Tor
wall to Merrivale. Up the hill towards Princetown a little
way before taking a sharp right towards the obelisk (or do
we call them standing stones down here???). Then across the
moor heading to the back of Kings Tor, fording again and climbing
up to the old railway. Followed that uphill and screamed down
the Kings Tor short cut. Back onto the railway down past Routrundle
to the style, through the gates back to the B3212 with the
intention of getting to HQ via Yennadon Down, Iron Mine Lane
and Lake Lane. This was scuppered by a puncture on Martyn’s
bike at which point a return to HQ was agreed by road. Colin
martyred himself by taking a team ahead to “line up the
Jails” whilst the back up team helped (watched) Martyn
change his inner tube.
STOP PRESS – DISASTER. The Rock ran dry of Jail Ale
and the gentlemen had to revert to Tribute for round 2. The
situation was SERIOUS. We thought The Rock was plumbed “drekkly” into
Dartmoor Brewery to avoid just this sort of scenario – now
there’s a thought!!! What a way to entertain visitors
from Horrabridge!!!
