Moretonhampstead or Badger Alley?

We experienced a schism before the off tonight with Westy feeling the need to get some road miles in before next month's Dartmoor Classic, more about the Roadies later! So, despite losing Colin and the Routemeister we still managed a healthy six in number. David made an appearance on his way home having tried out his new Specialized Tricross bike, very nice.

We set off for Pew Tor via Huckworthy but somehow the front three lost the rear three. Having ascended Pew Tor there was still no sight of the others. We caught them up before Vixen Tor where Greg sped off to experiment with his new role as photographer-in-chief. Seen laying flat on the ground at the bottom of the hill, I suddenly got this vision of the White Helmets (right) and it was only at the last moment that I remembered that Greg had a camera in his hands and not a plank of wood!!!!

Over the river and the leat to Merrivale and an about turn back down Badger Alley. Here Rob lived up to his own billing of 'crap at maintenance, great at repairs' by fixing a broken chain in a speed which I think would even amaze Paddy and Stephen!

We turned left up the hill to Routrundle then carried on up to the Dartmoor Rescue car park and descended down to Keith's Bridge. The usual route back to HQ followed via Leather Tor Bridge, Yennadon and Lake Lane. Within five minutes one of the roadies arrived. Within another five minutes the Routemeister arrived on foot having already been home, had a shower, eaten his dinner and read the papers!!

Seeing James, he borrowed a bike to return home to pick up a GOWCC jersey to elevate James to official member status. At this point Westy suffered an attack of cramp but didn't receive any sympathy from any of the gents, least of all from the physio!!

The Routemeister was a little scathing of Westy's road pace this evening with the average speed of 8mph to Princetown getting particular mention. And he did recount (more than once) the moment that Westy led them to the top of a hill only to be blown away with the click of a gear by the other two! A word of caution though, underestimate Westy at your peril.
