Route: WP, Clearbrook, Dewerstone, Brisworthy, Scout
Hut, Yellowmead Down, HQ.
Riders: Greg, Gidon, Dan, Jude, James, Alun & Sam
Depart: 19:45
Arrive: 21:35
Distance: 14 miles
Weather: Good
Greg, Alun and I arrived prompt at WP on a lovely warm evening and
were keen to make the most of the fading light. Gidon was picked up
at the end of the road, making four riders. Past the public conveniences
and onto Drake’s trail, bound for Clearbrook. James was hot on
our heels and caught us at Chub tor. A phone call then came through
from Dan and Jude they too were in close pursuit. As we waited at the
crossroads above Clearbrook, we had our first visit from Keith, presumably
the president was ensuring the gents code was being observed.
So after
a chat and a few photos, Jude swelled our numbers but Dan had decided
to make a solo dash for Goodameavy? We made our way across the down
via Martyn’s bridge to the steep descent onto the train track.
Finally the group congregated and climbed the 12:1 hill up towards
Urgles. Greg informed us that “this was one of his training hills” and
proceeded at real pace and purpose, whilst the rest of us looked on.
Now, we have crossed Wigford down successfully before but that was
a long tome ago. I don’t mind admitting I was leading the way
and had only a vague idea of the direction to get to Cadover. After
a fair amount of criss crossing we reached the highest point 260m.
I could see off in the distance a silhouetted figure flashing (with
a torch). I don’t think that anyone genuinely thought that Keith’s
second rendezvous would be this far from the beaten track. Fortunately
he did know where we were and the best way to get to Brisworthy and
we were again back on our way.
From Brisworthy across Ringmoor down to the cottage. At the top of
Earthquake we decided to take the high road to the scout hut, although
some were in favour of heading toward Gutter tor. On arriving at the
scout hut we headed due north to the corner of Roghtor plantation,
seldom has this stretch been as dry and therefore rideable.
Alun was most keen to bomb down the tricky, technical descent leading
to Deancombe and the rest of us were happy for him to ensure the
coast was clear. Deancombe to Norsworthy and the top road alongside
Burrator.
Those at the front of the group opted for the route through Meavy
wood, whilst the others were content to do the road miles back
to HQ. Keith
made his third visitation and was able to give a GOWCC potted history
as someone pointed out it was in fact five years to the day since
the very first gentlmanly ‘outing’, wooden wheels,
shopping baskets and parkers apparently; how things have changed.
It was also
a chance to raise a glass to Alun, days away from the big 40 and
James…….much
younger!
