A fine and dry evening for Tuesday’s
ride. Paddy retired early, not even leaving Willoby, due to
chain/cassette issues. His loss was my gain as he kindly donated
his light for the evening, thanks Paddy. That left just 4 gents
to head off in the direction of Long Ash. From here, down through
Sticklepath wood via the switchbacks on to the train track.
We crossed the Walkham at the new wooden bridge and continued
without incident to Grenofen, along the river. We decided against
double waters and instead headed up bastard hill (a different
one) bypassed Julian’s loop and cut across to the Halfway
House. More road-work to reach Plaster down, crossed grim & sort
leat heading NW towards Pewtor. Here we skirted Pewtor cottage,
Heckwood Tor, down past Vixen Tor, this was the only soggy
ground encountered all night without any rain for over a week.
Followed the leat to Merivale, Badger alley, Eggworthy, Walkhampton.
At this point Alex bailed out; not being able to face climbing
the hill twice in one evening. And so 3 cycling gentlemen met
3 non-cycling gentlemen at the jail for a couple of rocks.
